Caring For your kuvasz |
Although he is a large dog, the Kuvasz is generally quiet and unobtrusive in the house (except when strangers approach). He should, however, be given plenty of time to exercise himself outdoors. This is not to say it is impossible to keep a Kuvasz in a small house or even an apartment, but if you do, you must be prepared to take the dog to parks or the countryside at least three times a week for a good run. |
NEVER ALLOW A KUVASZ TO RUN LOOSE UNATTENDED. |
Take care not to force too much exercise on a young puppy. An animal instinctly knows the right amount to exercise. He is not a high energy dog. |
Although he is white, his coarse guard coat tends to shed dirt and, save for the show ring, a Kuvasz need never be bathed except if you want him to shed his winter down quickly. .Once a year he will lose his undercoat and this should be taken out with a comb and a slicker brush to prevent matting as well as clumps of fur lying around.A warm bath once a year at time of moulting (usually in early summer will trigger the inner coat to shed. Take the time and using a rake, take all the inner winter coat out and your kuvasz is left only with the outer coat to protect him from the hot summer's day. A regular brushing with a slicker and or rake will keep him clean and comfortable and white. The Kuvasz kept indoors will shed a small amount all the time. |
His nails should be trimmed as required. Some dogs nails never have to be trimmed, as they do it naturally on the ground but some that are more house dogs will have to have them trimmed. Keeping the nails trim insured he is not down on his paturns but on the ball of his foot. Check out his ears periodically to insure cleanliness. Wipe with warm washcloth. Bones keep his teeth clean. |
